The next Windows release is an update for the current Windows 8 version

Microsoft has finally confirmed that Windows Blue would hit the market as Windows 8.1, while also revealing that a preview version is set to be unveiled on June 26.

Another important thing that Windows CFO Tami Reller mentioned in the JP Morgan Technology, Media and Telecom Conference was the fact that Windows 8.1 should not be considered a service pack, but rather an update for the existing Windows 8 version.

While one could hardly make a difference between the two, it’s very important to note that Microsoft could thus put an end to the service pack concept that has been around since Windows XP.

If this is true, Windows 7 users could indeed be left without a second service pack, but instead might receive more frequent updates that would improve the overall performance and stability of the operating system.
