We’re working on it, the company says in an advisory

KB3038314 is one of the botched updates that Microsoft released this Patch Tuesday and although plenty of users have already confirmed installation issues with it, the company is yet to provide a workaround that could help them fix the problems.

What the company did was to publicly acknowledge the trouble you might have when trying to install KB3038314 on a Windows 7 computer, adding that the Windows team is already working on fix that could be released in the coming days.

Unfortunately, no specifics have been provided on when exactly we could actually get the fix, but given the big number of affected users, expect this to happen very soon. As we’ve reported to you yesterday, the company has already managed to reproduce the KB3038314 bug and identify its cause, so it shouldn’t take too long before a solution is provided.

Updated KB article

Microsoft says in the updated KB article page for MS15-032 that it’s indeed aware of installation issues with KB3038314 and recommends users getting error code 80092004 to check the current version of Internet Explorer to make sure that they’re protected.

“If you receive this error message, click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu to determine whether the security update was installed. If the Update Versions line shows KB3038314, this indicates that the security update is correctly installed and that the system is not in an unprotected state,” the company says.

But what if the update is not correctly installed? Even though Microsoft doesn’t specifically say it, this pretty much means that users are unprotected, so unless a fix is provided, it might not be such a good idea to continue using Internet Explorer.

In the meantime, those experiencing these issues could try the workaround we suggested yesterday, but once again, there’s no solution right now that addresses problems on all impacted computers.
