Microsoft has announced that the Unity add-on will now be free for all registered indie developers in the Independent Developers Xbox program. The goal is to “to lower friction for developers on Microsoft platforms to make sure gamers get access to the broadest and deepest library of amazing games on the planet.”

The add-on is due in 2014 and will be available for Xbox One and will only give registered developers the chance to use the Unity game engine in order to publish titles on the new console, Windows 8 and Windows 8 devices.

Moreover, Microsoft has promised to keep an eye out for promising titles that actually deserve promotion and marketing. Therefore, by offering Unity free to developers that are willing to register, they are hoping to bring unique and intriguing content to next-gen platforms.

Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason said “Microsoft continues to show their commitment to creating opportunity for developers of all shapes and sizes, a commitment shared by Unity.” Also, he went on to say “The drive behind the IDXbox program is exciting for Unity and the games development community in general. We can’t wait to see the results.”

The IDXbox program aims to make development and publishing friendlier, Director of IDXbox Chris Charla saying “To us, IDXbox is about providing a level playing field for all developers.”

Indie Developers that do no sign up for Microsoft's program will not be able to get Unity free for Xbox One.
