Exactly a year ago, Microsoft was announced to be ending support for the Windows Phone 7.8 mobile operating system starting September 9, 2014.

But the Redmond giant is a merciful god. Now, the official support page for Windows Phone 7.8 shows us that Microsoft has extended the availability of support for the OS until October 14. So you have about a month left to take advantage of it before it succumbs to the void.

It’s interesting to note that 19.2% of Windows Phone users are currently still using the Windows 7.8 platform, so will a month suffice for all these people to make a transition into higher territory? Or will Microsoft revisit its decision and decide to add some extra months of life support?

Windows Phone 7.8 is a pretty old operating system which has seen the light of days two years ago. The OS was replaced in October of the same year by Windows Phone 8, but some folks still seem to remain attached to it.

Anyway, as of this summer Microsoft started pushing the Windows Phone 8.1 update. This might be the last built taking advantage of this name, as Microsoft is looking to change its nomenclature and unify its desktop and mobile business under the sole “Windows” banner.
