Microsoft is considering opening a new data center in Europe, this time in the Netherlands where it has already found the location for the new facility.

DutchNews is reporting that Microsoft wants to build a new data center to cover no less than 40 acres of land near the A7 highway, an investment that would total approximately $2.7 billion (€2 billion).

It turns out that plans for the new European data center have been on the table for a long time, as Microsoft has already negotiated with several countries on the Old Continent.

Microsoft’s intention to expand its cloud offering with a new data center pretty much makes sense, especially because the company continues the transition to a devices and services approach.

At the same time, chances are that Microsoft will have a cloud-focused CEO, as Satya Nadella, currently in charge of Redmond’s cloud business, is in the pole-position to replace Steve Ballmer in early 2014.
