Microsoft has just announced that OneNote, its very own note-taking solution that can be downloaded on a wide variety of platforms, is now completely free for Windows users, thus making all premium features that were previously reserved for paid editions available at absolutely no cost.

In 2014, Microsoft made the desktop version of Note free for personal use, but a number of features, such as page history, audio and video recording, audio search, embedded files, and password-protected sections, were still being offered with a paid license.

The company says that the amount of feedback it received in the last months was overwhelming, so starting today, the desktop version of OneNote can be downloaded on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 completely free of charge.

All features mentioned above will be included in this free build as well, and thanks to OneDrive integration, all your notes are automatically synced to all your devices using cloud power.

Also available on touch-capable Windows devices

OneNote has become a key product for Microsoft and in the last few years the company has worked to make the note-taking solution available on as many platforms as possible, including non-Windows desktop and mobile operating systems.

At the same time, the software has also tried to boost the productivity side of the touch-based side of Windows by developing a touch-optimized version of OneNote, so Windows 8.1 users can now download and install the app to work with it right in the Modern UI of their tablets.

Microsoft has adopted the same strategy for Office, its productivity suite that was previously available on desktops exclusively, so starting with Windows 10, Office will also be offered to Modern UI users.

Office Touch will be pre-installed on all versions of Windows 10 for tablets and phones, while all the other devices can download it free of charge from the Windows Store. OneNote is already up for grabs from the store on all modern versions of Windows, including Windows 10.

If you want to give the new free app for desktops a try, download OneNote for Windows and enjoy all premium features without paying a single cent.
