Just as rumored, Microsoft will launch Windows Store gift cards next week, thus making available new methods to purchase applications offered to adopters of its latest operating system.

Previous reports have indicated that Windows Store gift cards would be eligible for Windows Phone, Windows Store, and Xbox Store, but Microsoft has remained tight-lipped on details for the time being.

Here’s what the company revealed in a blog post rolled out this morning:

“Perhaps one of the most notable addition to the Windows Store shopping experience this year will be the introduction of gift cards over the next few months just in time for the holiday season. Always a hot commodity around the holidays, gift cards offer new revenue opportunities for Windows Store app builders.”

Windows 8.1 will officially debut on October 18 and Windows 8 adopters will be allowed to download it free from the Store. Other users will have to pay at least $119.99 (€90) for the core license.
