Microsoft has officially launched Office Mobile for iPhone, a rather limited app that allows owners of Apple’s flagship device to create and edit documents on the go.
While this could sound like pretty exciting news for Apple fanboys, it’s not, especially because the app is only available for Office 365 Home Premium and Office 365 ProPlus subscribers. In other words, you need a subscription to use it, even though the app comes free of charge in the App Store.
Office Mobile for iPhone is very similar in features with the version that’s already available on Windows Phones and allows you to easily sign in to your Office 365 account to access and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
The app has been specifically optimized for small-screen devices, such as the iPhone, so you should be able to create or read a document with ease.
“For instance, the Slide Navigator allows you to page through PowerPoint presentations fast while Speaker Notes help you practice presentations on the go. When reviewing Word documents on your phone, the Resume Reading feature takes you to the exact point in the document where you left off on your computer so you never miss a beat,” Microsoft explained.
Another interesting feature of Office Mobile for iPhone is the built-in sharing option that can save documents directly to SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro. In addition, users can send a document as an email attachment.
“Because Office Mobile is from Microsoft, your formatting and layout remain intact when viewing, editing or adding comments, thanks to support for charts, animations, SmartArt graphics and shapes. When you return to your PC or Mac your document looks like it should,” the company added.
No iPad support is available for the time being, but Microsoft will most likely release a tablet-optimized version of the app by the end of the year. Check out the video below for a short presentation of the new Office Mobile for iPhone.
