Microsoft last week launched Office for iPad and we all knew that it was only a matter of time until the productivity suite became one of the most downloaded tools in the App Store.

So today’s news might not be too surprising for some, but Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for iPad are now holding the three top spots in the Free category of the Apple Store.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella himself posted a screenshot on Twitter to highlight this achievement, which it makes very clear that Redmond is very pleased with how the adoption of its productivity suite is going.

Word for iPad currently has more than 1,000 ratings, while Excel received only 521 in the first few days on the market. All are available free of charge, allowing users to view documents on their iPad in just a few seconds.

Office for iPad also comes with editing features, but they’re only available with an Office 365 subscription. A printing option is currently missing from the app, but word is that Redmond could implement it in a future app update, so expect many more improvements to be released in the coming months.

Microsoft is also working on a Metro build of Office and people familiar with the matter claim that it’s expected to be launched sometime this year.
