Microsoft might have its own OneDrive cloud-based storage service, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that the company isn’t willing to provide users with access to other similar solutions, so today it has announced Box integration with Office Online.

In other words, Box customers who are also using Office Online for document editing features can now work with their files more easily thanks to a number of new options that allow for quick editing and saving in their cloud accounts.

The news comes only a few months after Microsoft announced a similar partnership with Dropbox, so by adding support for Box, Redmond isn’t necessarily stealing OneDrive’s karma, but it’s offering users more options to work with their documents in the cloud.

“Full editing capabilities”

First and foremost, Box customers are now provided with an “open with” option in their accounts that allows them to quickly open a document in Office Online. Once they edit the text and complete their work on the file, it’s automatically saved back to Box without the need to press any other button.

Obviously, all types of Office documents are supported, so you get full editing capabilities, as Box itself has said today.

“All of the editing features that have made Office Online the standard for creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations in the cloud, will be fully functional from the Box platform and available with the same interface that our users are familiar with,” the company explains.

And very soon, more options will be integrated into Box accounts to quickly share content in Office Online and make collaboration easier from the cloud.

Box says that it’s already working with Microsoft on a number of new projects, including better implementation of support for native Office clients on iOS, Android, and Windows, but more news on this will be announced “later this year.”
