Redmond-based software giant Microsoft has recently updated its Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile 2007 R2, a unified communications client that works on Pocket PCs and smartphones running under Windows Mobile 6.0 or higher. When it released the solution back in January, the company announced that additional features and capabilities would be added to it, and the new iteration brings them to the table.

“The 2007 R2 version of Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile is an enterprise application for mobile devices that helps you quickly find and communicate with your colleagues. The application is designed to make communication easier and more accessible and includes real-time presence information, single number reach support and rich instant messaging (IM) capability all with a familiar look and feel similar to the desktop version of Microsoft Office Communicator,” Eric Nelson explains on the Windows Mobile Blog.

One of the main features that the updated version of the solution comes with include an easier way to join conferences while on the go. The Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 now features a new UC Conferencing capability, and it is meant to enable users to join conferences with the single push of a button. As soon as a UC conference invitation is opened in Outlook Mobile, the “Join Conference” option will be displayed.

In addition, the new flavor of Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile also offers users the possibility to avoid roaming charges. According to the Office Communicator team blog, the solution will not connect when outside the provider’s network, but will do so as soon as the user gets back within the coverage area. The Communicator enables users to select this option, and all will be done automatically from there on.

Other features have been included as well, all meant to offer the owners of a handset running under the Windows Mobile operating system the possibility to enjoy an enhanced experience. The capability to make a call via work is one of these features, enabling customers to place outbound calls while using their work identity. The connection is completed automatically, as the Communicator can now automatically accept an incoming call.
