A similar list is also available for Windows Installer 4.5

Customers experiencing problems related to Windows Installer can turn to a new document published by Microsoft Support in order to get a little help.

KB 2625845 contains a list with all the hotfixes that the Redmond company made available for Windows Installer 5.0.

For those that don’t know, Windows Installer 5.0 ships with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

But as far as version 5.0 of WI is concerned, only two hotfixes have been offered by the software giant.

KB 2514642 “Windows Installer package that requires the SeBackupPrivilege user right fails in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2” is designed to resolve an issue in Windows 7 RTM and Service Pack 1 (SP1) as well as in Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM and SP1.

In contrast, KB 2394120 “"0xC00E5201" error code occurs when you try to create an .msp file in Windows 7” deals only with the RTM version of the operating system.

The same Knowledge Base article offers links to hotfixes for Windows Installer 4.5. According to the Redmond company, Windows Installer 4.5 is available for: Windows Server 2008 RTM, Windows Vista, Windows Vista SP1, Windows XP SP2, Windows XP SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Windows Server 2003 SP2.

The number of WI 4.5 hotfixes is a tad larger, and users will be able to find them all included in KB 2625845.

Just as a reminder, customers not affected by the specific issues that the hotfixes are designed to resolve should not deploy them.

As a general rule, hotfixes are released only to help a certain segment of users resolve a problem which doesn’t impact all users, in which case, Microsoft would issue an update. In some cases, hotfixes are not fully tested, and certainly not ready for release to all customers, according to the software giant.
