The lack of touchscreen devices that would be capable of making the most of Windows 8 has always been considered one potential reason for the disappointing early uptake of the new operating system, but Microsoft is apparently trying to take care of this issue.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is now offering discounts on Windows 8 and Office software to manufacturers in order to help them embrace the new OS and thus bring a new range of devices on the market.

Microsoft hopes to see a new family of products going live in the third or the fourth quarter of this year, including smaller tablets and laptops running Windows 8.

With Windows Blue in the pipeline, launching a new discount campaign seems to be quite a smart decision, especially since Microsoft clearly needs Blue to be successful and thus lend a hand to the disappointing Windows 8.
