As we have already told you, the New York Times has recently launched its crossword puzzle in digital version on Windows 8.1, allowing all those who have made the move to this OS version to solve the game that was already available in all printed issues of the newspaper.

Microsoft has announced today that a one-year subscription for the game will be available for all Surface Pro 3 buyers who purchase a tablet before October 6.

“If puzzles are your go-to brain break, then the NYT Crossword probably reigns as one of the most challenging ones. You can play the free daily mini puzzle on your Windows Phone, PC or tablet, or subscribe to the daily full puzzle. And between now and Oct. 6, you’ll get a free one-year subscription to it when you buy a new Surface Pro 3 through the Microsoft Store,” Microsoft says in the announcement today.

Free for download, but offered with a subscription

The game is indeed available in the store with a freeware license, but in order to play all puzzles, you need to purchase a subscription.

Of course, NYT Crossword can be played on both desktops and tablets and offers great touch controls, which makes it easy to solve even on a Surface RT.

“The app is free to download, and all users get unlimited access to the daily puzzle and calendar archive for a week. After that, subscribe for full access to The Crossword on Windows 8 and at NYTimes.com. It’s the same puzzle printed daily in The New York Times newspaper,” Microsoft says.

The best experience you could get is on a Surface tablet with a digital pen, which obviously makes it even easier to play, offering a feel that’s very similar to what you’ll get in the printed daily newspaper.

The Surface Pro 3 is a tablet which can replace your laptop

Microsoft continues with this new campaign its aggressive efforts to promote the Surface Pro 3 as a laptop replacement, claiming that its device has what it takes to offer the best of two different worlds, namely tablets and laptops.

The Surface Pro 3 comes with a 12-inch screen and offers several CPU configurations ranging between Intel Core i3 and i7.

The top-of-the-range model is featuring not only an Intel Core i7 processor, but also 512 GB of storage space, 8 GB of RAM and several connectivity options, such as Bluetooth and USB 3.0 ports.

At the same time, the device is also shipped with a digital pen that makes it really easy to draw and write, which helped Microsoft advertise the product as the perfect companion for artists.
