Microsoft has just announced that Skype and Lync users around the world are now capable of chatting with each other using the downloadable VoIP client.

Basically, Skype users can simply add a Lync contact by typing in the email address, regardless of whether they are running Windows or Mac.

“Lync-Skype connectivity removes barriers created by the rules of different devices, applications and networks that keep people from connecting seamlessly on the devices they use most,” Microsoft explained.

At this point, IM and audio calling are the only two supported features, but the tech giant promises to introduce even more options in the near future, including video calling.

“This is our first step in combining the enterprise richness of Lync and the global reach of Skype to transform the communications experience and enable Skype users to reach professional contacts in organizations of all sizes,” it noted.
