Microsoft continues to bet big on Internet Explorer on the desktop, but it turns out that the company might actually launch the browser on some mobile platforms as well, in order to reach a wider audience and expand its products into yet-unexplored sides of the industry.

Word is that Microsoft is now pondering a new plan that could bring Internet Explorer on Android, even though it would obviously be a major challenge to convince users to at least give it a try.

Twitter user @dovellonsky revealed today that porting Internet Explorer to Android could be one of Microsoft’s biggest projects in the coming months, even though no one can yet guarantee that this rumor is true and Redmond is indeed interested in bringing its application on mobile platforms.

Internet Explorer for Android would have a pretty difficult mission to compete with Chrome which is undoubtedly the number one browser right now on this mobile OS.

Of course, given the fact that many users are still reluctant from trying Internet Explorer on the desktop, Microsoft would also have to work very hard to show the benefits of an Android port, especially when users already have several powerful apps to choose from.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft for a word on this, so we’ll update the article when and if we get an answer.
