Some customers leveraging Microsoft Mediaroom version 1.1 need to start planning ahead for an upgrade as their version of the Client and Server will expire in less than a year.

While as late as October 2010 there was no official policy for Microsoft Mediaroom, this aspect has changed. Essentially, Microsoft put together a new Support Lifecycle policy for its digital media platform.

According to the information provided by the software giant, Microsoft Mediaroom Server 1.1 SP2; Microsoft Mediaroom Server 1.1 SP3.0 as well as Microsoft Mediaroom Client 1.2 will all expire on October 11, 2011.

Version 1.1 of the digital media platform also includes Microsoft Mediaroom Server 1.1 SP3.2 (CP1, CP2 and CP3) and Microsoft Mediaroom Client 1.6, both of which will hit end of support on January 8, 2013.

“As of September 2010, Microsoft Mediaroom will be providing the various software products under the banner of Microsoft Mediaroom System Software five years of support or two years after the successor system release is provided -- whichever is longer,” revealed David Carrington, from Microsoft Support Lifecycle team.

It’s quite strange that the Redmond company did not slap a Support Lifecycle Policy on Mediaroom from the get go.

But at the same time, this is understandable, considering that Mediaroom is not really a standalone product, but actually a mix of solutions, including Windows Server, SQL Server, System Center Operations Manager, each with its own Support Lifecycle Policy.

“With Microsoft Mediaroom System Software 1.1 and later versions following standard Microsoft Support Lifecycle policies, Mediaroom customers can expect more consistent and predictable support policies and timelines for these products,” Carrington added.

“For Microsoft Mediaroom 1.1 System Software, many releases will reach the end of support in October 2011 and customers are encouraged to migrate to supported versions before that time.”
