Microsoft continues to push hard when it comes down to the evolution of its Virtual Earth and Live Search map search, mapping and location platforms into the cloud, but, at the same time, the company is offering alternatives focused exclusively on the desktop. This is where Microsoft MapPoint 2009 comes in.

Already released for the United States since August 2008, as a trial version, and for sale since September 1, MapPoint 2009 is now also available for Europe. Although it was estimated that, as of December, Microsoft would launch just the German and English versions of MapPoint 2009, the company managed to do much more.

“We've officially released MapPoint 2009 European English Edition into the wild. Now our friends across the pond can experience the greatness of our desktop mapping application with data updates and a new user interface," revealed Chris Pendleton, Virtual Earth tech evangelist at Microsoft. “MapPoint 2009 European Edition is available in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.”

Initially, the company indicated that just Microsoft MapPoint 2009 European maps in German and English would hit in December 2008, with the French, Italian and Spanish localized versions expected on January 1, 2009.

According to Microsoft, when it comes down to street level maps and address finding capabilities, Microsoft MapPoint 2009 European maps cover just Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. An inferior level of coverage is available for Andorra, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Monaco, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Vatican City.

“Microsoft MapPoint 2009 gives you the power to visualize business data, communicate insights with instant impact, and integrate maps into the work you do in Microsoft Office. MapPoint 2009 with GPS Locator adds routing and directions to easily plan your trips and track your location in real-time,” Pendleton added.
