Microsoft Research, a division of the Redmond-based company in charge with new, innovative projects, launched a while ago an application for Windows Phone, Android and iOS called Xim.

The mobile application was only available in the United States, so developers could get enough feedback for a worldwide launch. It looks like beginning version 1.2.1, Windows Phone, Android and iOS users who want to download Microsoft’s Xim application can do so from anywhere in the world.

The new version of Microsoft Xim brings worldwide availability, as well a few improvements such as new voice verification in addition to SMS and various bug fixes.

Given the fact that Microsoft Xim hasn’t been available for all mobile users, here is a quick rundown of what the application can do for you.

Microsoft Xim is a photo sharing application that allows users to share photos with their friends even if they don’t have Xim app installed on their smartphones.

Although all photos disappear after a while, users can choose to save them or take a screenshot whenever they feel like it. You don’t need storage space if you don’t intend to save any of the photos shared.

It’s also worth mentioning that Xim functionality may be limited on certain browsers such as those running on a PC or tablet device, but developers confirmed they are working on it.

But how does Xim work? Well, you only need to invite people from your phone’s contact list, via email or via phone number and choose photos from the camera roll, Instagram, Facebook, Dropbox or OneDrive, and share them with these people.

Only one user needs to have the Xim application installed

If at least one of your friends installs Microsoft Xim on his/her device, then he/she will be able to add photos or people to the application, thus extending the conversation.

All photos are opened in browser, but as mentioned earlier, not all mobile browsers may be compatible with Microsoft Xim.

It also doesn’t matter if you friends are using Android smartphones and you’re using a Windows Phone handset, as they will always be able to see the photos shared and extend the conversation if they decide to install Xim app on their devices.

Developers also included a nifty feature that allows everyone involved in a conversation to swipe and zoom together, so everyone stays in sync automatically.

You can now download Microsoft Xim for Windows Phone 1.2.1 for free via Windows Phone Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Windows Phone 8 and up.
