The new brand will be used for Microsoft phones

Microsoft has officially confirmed in a press release that the Nokia brand will be replaced with “Microsoft Lumia” on all future handsets released by the company, thus trying to put an emphasis on its efforts to expand in the mobile business.

Tuula Rytilä, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Phones at Microsoft, has made the announcement this morning, revealing that the change will take place over the course of several months.

The Nokia brand won’t disappear completely and will continue to be used for devices that are already on the market until new models come out to replace the existing ones. At the same time, the Nokia brand will continue to be used for low-end handsets which aren’t running Windows Phone and are specifically developed for emerging markets.

The company, however, hasn’t denied the possibility to dump the Nokia brand completely for this particular type of phones, but it remains to be seen whether this would happen sooner or later.

Microsoft Lumia device coming soon

Microsoft hasn’t commented on the possibility to see a device launched under Microsoft Lumia brand’s umbrella in the coming months, but the company has hinted that one is coming “very soon.”

“This is of course a natural progression as all devices that once came from Nokia now come from Microsoft,” Rytilä said in the interview which you can read in full after the jump.

“Microsoft remains committed to bringing amazing Lumia experiences with a strong portfolio of phones that offer something for everyone.”

Needless to say, Microsoft goes on with the existing Lumia lineup, pointing out that they boast pretty much the best feature lineup you can find right now on the Windows Phone product series. Microsoft will continue to honor warranties and offer services just like before.

Nokia brand for entry-level phones

Rytilä also explains that Nokia will continue to be used as a brand for low-end phones, but there’s no doubt that the company won’t release too many devices that fall into this category.

Windows Phone is currently the main focus for the Redmond-based tech giant and according to sources, the smartphone platform is projected to receive a major update next year when the company also starts the Windows 10 rollout.

People familiar with the development plans indicated that a preview version of Windows 10 for Windows RT and Windows Phone devices would be released in early 2015 and Microsoft has already confirmed that its smartphone operating system will be updated next year as part of the Windows 10 release cycle.
