Today's patches are meant to prepare PCs for a new build

Microsoft has just rolled out three different updates for Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926 that are supposed to prepare computers for a new version of the operating system expected to arrive next week.

KB3040021, KB3038930, and KB3021952 are all being shipped via Windows Update, just like all the other patches that Microsoft delivered on Patch Tuesday, so users of build 9926 are recommended to get them as soon as possible.

The first two updates are specifically developed to prepare your computers for future builds, while the third one is a security update for Internet Explorer 11.

Microsoft hasn't provided any details on what exactly the first two patches are trying to fix on build 9926, but the official pages of KB3040021 and KB3038930 reveal that their purpose is to “assist with installing future builds.”

Only available on build 9926

Today's patches are only shipped to devices running build 9926, so in case you haven't yet updated to this particular build, you won't see anything in Windows Update.

This is actually another confirmation that the next build, most likely coming next week, will only be available on devices running Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926, so those who are still on 9879 or 9860 won't be able to get it.

On the bright side, the company is also planning to launch new stand-alone ISOs for the upcoming build, so in case you haven't yet deployed build 9926, these will allow you to get it without the pain of updating to every new build.

Windows 10 is expected to get the go-ahead later this year, with RTM rumored to be planned for June. The official release could take place in September, but there are some voices out there who claim that October is a much more likely launch date for Windows 10, especially because it comes exactly three years after the unveiling of Windows 8.
