More improvements are available for newer Windows versions

Today, Microsoft introduced 8 different security bulletins as part of the Patch Tuesday rollout, but the company also shipped some other improvements that do not necessarily fall in the security section.

A total of eight non-security updates were delivered to computers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 R2, most of them bringing bug fixes and other improvements in terms of performance and reliability.

The new update list, which you can find just after the jump, also includes KB2952664, a patch that’s said to cause quite a lot of problems on Windows 7 computers because it fails to install and reappears whenever Windows Update is launched.

According to reports coming from Windows 7 users who tried to install the update, KB2952664 fails with error code 80242016 whenever they attempt to install it. This particular patch isn’t new, as it was first launched in April 2014, and it’s supposed to help users migrate to a newer OS version faster.

An update for Windows Store bugs

If you’re running Windows 8.1 and you’ve had problems with Modern apps, you’re in luck because one of the bulletins released today comes to address bugs that prevent these tools from being automatically updated.

The KB2989542 is aimed at both x86 and x64 versions of Windows 8.1 and addresses bugs experienced when setting up the Windows Store to obtain updates automatically and using a proxy to access the Internet.

“This problem occurs when you use a statically configured Proxy Auto Configuration (PAC) file,” Microsoft said.

Improvements for Windows 10 Preview also offered

Even though it’s still in development stage, Windows 10 Preview also received a bunch of security fixes that are supposed to protect users against exploits recently found in either the operating system itself or Internet Explorer.

What’s more, Microsoft is readying a new Windows 10 Preview build that could ship as soon as this week with new features and improvements, but the company hasn’t provided any specifics on this.

However, according to information coming from within the company, Windows 10 Preview should be updated once or twice per month, so the original build is very likely to get its first pack of improvements in the coming days.

As is the case with all the other Windows versions, these improvements for Windows 10 Preview are automatically shipped via Windows Update, but new builds will be delivered with the help of a new update system specifically designed for this OS.
