The company claims it’s now working to address a specific 80188308 error

We reported yesterday that Microsoft might have fixed the 8018830f error that prevented Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview adopters from installing the latest GDR1 update on their smartphones.

However, at that time, the Redmond-based company did not confirm the fact that the fix had been released, so there was no way for those affected by the issue to know about it unless they would have read certain forums or news sites.

Well, it looks like several hours after our article went live, Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore confirmed that the fix for error 8018830f had been released and that those affected should try to upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 once again.

Here is his short statement on the matter, “... if you hit update error 8018830F -- the fix is out. It was a ‘packaging problem’ with the update. Try again and it should work.”

It looks like it only took Microsoft a few days to address this problem. Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 started to arrive on Developer Preview handsets on Monday, but a small percentage of users have been affected by error 8018830f, which did not allow their phones to open the already downloaded update file.

Microsoft’s forum was almost immediately flooded with complaints, so the company acknowledged the issue and announced it was working on a fix, which was released yesterday.

The bad news is that some Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview users still can’t upgrade to GDR1. According to Joe Belfiore, Microsoft is now working on fixing the so-called “low storage” issue that seems to affect some Windows Phone users.

“Still working on the ‘low storage’ install problem 80188308. Note, this is not USER storage you can clear- it's install partition. Sit tight.”

Those affected by this issue should expect a fix in the next few days or even later today. We will keep an eye out for any additional details on the matter, so stay tuned for more on this one.

In the same piece of news, Windows Phone users who own a HTC device are still unable to download and install the GDR1 update. HTC continues to test Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for the 8X. The company also confirmed that this upgrade would never be available for HTC 8S.

Unfortunately, there’s no telling when exactly HTC will finish testing the update, but we suspect 8X owners will only be able to download Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 beginning next week.

If you are a HTC user and you successfully captured the GDR1 update on your 8X, then let us know in the comments section below.
