Microsoft is going through a major transformation plan right now that’s supposed to complete sometime in the near future, but this hasn’t stopped the company from improving its quarterly earnings.

This is possible because Microsoft is making the right choices to complete its reorganization process, with cloud solutions playing a key role in the entire process, Al Hilwa, an analyst with IDC, told The Guardian.

“This is by no means a company on the ropes like it has been portrayed recently. A transformation such as the one Microsoft is going through typically would require several years to execute fully, but Microsoft’s broad portfolio of products and its early move to the cloud are helping the company weather this much better than expected,” Hilwa said.

“There really was stuff to cheer about in multiple areas, but the growth in the enterprise business especially the database product (SQL Server) and the cloud business are key.”

Microsoft also continues the search for a new CEO, with Steve Ballmer to retire as soon as a successor is found. Pundits are claiming that Stephen Elop, former Nokia boss, and Alan Mulally, head of American automaker Ford, are the top choices for the CEO seat.
