Microsoft will reveal its Windows 10 plans for consumers at an event on January 21, and shortly after that, the company is expected to ship a brand new Technical Preview version of the operating system that would obviously include plenty of improvements.

Likely to hit the market as January Technical Preview (JTP), the new Windows 10 build will also include visual tweaks and new features that would be specifically aimed at consumers, as Microsoft advances with the development process of its new platform.

Windows 10 JTP will be shipped through the usual channels, including the built-in update system which makes it easy to deploy new builds without losing files and settings.

In the last few weeks, we’ve spotted several new tweaks that could be part of the final version of Windows 10, and now Windows Insider boss Gabriel Aul hints that at least some of them could be part of the January Technical Preview.

New taskbar and dark theme

“There's always a chance [to see these features]:-) 1/21 is right around the corner, you'll see soon,” he said in a post on Twitter.

The leaked screenshots that have reached the web lately point to a dark theme for Windows 10, as well as a redesigned taskbar that appears to be making the desktop of the new OS a bit more appealing and modern.

New icons will also be part of Windows 10 at some point, including those that would be placed on the taskbar, again for a refined look of the OS.

The January Technical Preview is expected to be introduced only a few days after the next week event, and it’s worth knowing that only those running an official build will be able to update.

Both build 9888 and 9901 come with a bug that does not allow such tasks to be performed, so those who wish to update need to downgrade to 9879 to do so.
