Spartan browser will become more like Chrome and Firefox

Windows 10 will come with a completely new browser that will be available across all devices, as Microsoft wants to step away from Internet Explorer and start over with a new app developed from the ground up.

These days, Microsoft still prefers to remain tight-lipped when it comes to some specific features that would help it compete against Google Chrome and Firefox, including new functionality that would allow the so-called Spartan browser (still a codename for the time being) to use extensions, just like its rivals do.

We've already heard that Microsoft is at least thinking about bringing extension support in Spartan browser, but this thing has never been confirmed by someone working for the tech giant.

And yet, in a dev chat on Twitter, the Internet Explorer team offered a hint that extensions are indeed likely to debut in Spartan and Windows 10.

“Stay tuned for more details on extensions plans...” the team said in a very short and intriguing tweet, which clearly suggests that extensions are on their way.

Spartan could get its own store

What's also interesting is how Microsoft actually plans to make these extensions available for users of its new Spartan browser.

Hints coming from people close to the matter indicate that Microsoft is looking into ways to bring extensions right in the Windows Store, as the new Windows 10 store is supposed to become the one destination for absolutely everything, including apps, games, music, and videos.

Extensions would fit in here just perfectly, and given the fact that Spartan will be offered as a Modern app available across all devices, this plan really makes sense.

On the other hand, Microsoft could also launch a separate store just for Spartan, more like the Google Chrome store, but this is less likely, given the fact that Redmond wants to tackle confusion and make sure that everyone can find these extensions more easily.

Links to the extension store, wherever it would be implemented, would obviously be available right in Spartan, so it shouldn't be too hard to add new features to your browser.
