Some of you may already know about the new Microsoft Health application for Windows Phone that leaked a few days ago. But at that time we did not know what changes it brings or when exactly it will be available for download to Windows Phone users.

Recently, Microsoft confirmed that its Health application will receive a major update that will bring support for sensors contained in many Android, iOS and Windows Phone handsets.

According to the Redmond-based company, these new features will be compatible with iPhone 5s or later, smartphones powered by Android 4.4+ and support for Step Counter API, as well as Lumia devices with Sensor Core V1+ and Cyan firmware.

“We know some of our customers are interested in tracking their fitness activity through Microsoft Health as a first step in tracking their health data. Microsoft Health is an open platform, and it is designed to combine the data from devices with services already in use,” said Microsoft in a blog post.

Users will be able to download the Microsoft Health application to their phones and get stepping even without a fitness tracking wearable device.

The new step tracking capabilities will be rolled out in the coming weeks

As Microsoft mentioned, the new features will be available in the coming weeks for all smartphone users who want to take advantage of their wearable devices, other than Microsoft Band.

“We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, customers can track daily steps and calorie burn inside of the Microsoft Health app using the sensors contained in many Android Phones, iPhones and Windows Phones,” confirmed Matt Barlow, General Manager of New Devices Marketing.

Microsoft encourages those who wish to take advantage of these step tracking capabilities to continue to provide feedback and responses to Microsoft health and Microsoft Band, so that developers can offer an even better experience on Android, iOS and Windows Phone handsets.
