The Lumia 830 successor is already in the works at Microsoft, but an exact release date is still unknown for the moment. Rumor has it that the Redmond-based company plans to launch two mid-range and two high-end Windows Phones in the next couple of months.

Even if we initially thought that all four smartphones will be powered by Windows 10 for Phones right out of the box, it looks like Microsoft changed its mind and at least one of the upcoming handsets will ship with a previous version of the operating system.

The unannounced Lumia 840 was supposed to be released in the summer, but Microsoft has hastened the release of the smartphone which is expected to arrive “in the coming months,” a new report claims.

Because Lumia 840 will be launched ahead of Microsoft's Windows 10 for Phones, it will be powered by Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2.

However, as soon as Microsoft releases the new version of the OS, Lumia 830 will be eligible for a Windows 10 for Phones upgrade.

On the other hand, both Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL devices will ship with Windows 10 for Phones right out of the box, since they will hit shelves later than Lumia 840.

Dual-SIM support and PureView camera

Moving on to specs, we don't have any new information apart from those details that leaked several days ago. If you haven't paid attention on what's coming inside the Lumia 840, here is a short recap.

First of all, Lumia 840 will be equipped with better processor and front-facing camera. On the back, the smartphone will features a 13-14-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, video recording, as well as PureView technology.

It will probably feature the same design layout as the Lumia 830 and a 5-megapixel camera in the front for video calls and selfies. Lumia 840 will probably offer dual-SIM support as well, along with a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display.

Since these specs have been taken from a prototype unit, it's possible that Microsoft will change them by the time Lumia 840 goes official, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
