Redmond-based technology giant Microsoft has been granted a new patent in the United States that covers the design of its Surface RT and Pro tablets, thus blocking other companies from copying its device.

According to Patent Bolt, the United States Patent and Trademark Office listing indicated that Microsoft has applied for the patent in May 12, 2012, approximately one month before the company publicly presented the first Surface concept.

One of the key elements protected by the patent is the built-in kickstand that allows the Surface tablet to be used just like a traditional laptop, also thanks to its Touch or Type cover.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is also working on some other Surface tablets, including smaller units specifically tailored for gaming, so chances are that more such patents are likely to be approved in the coming months.
