VideoLAN started work on a Windows 8 port of VLC more than one year ago, but the developing team is still facing all kinds of difficulties that prevent it from releasing the app.

Now it appears that VLC for Windows 8 has passed the Windows App Certification Kit test on September 23, so the public downloadable version is expected to be released anytime soon.

VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf told Neowin that although the app has received Microsoft’s go-ahead, it still lacks audio output, which means that developers still need to resolve some essential issues.

While there’s no official release date, Kempf promised to disclose more details about the app in the next couple of weeks, which means that we’re most likely very close to the public launch of VLC for Windows 8.
