Windows XP will be discontinued in only two months, so Microsoft is now making the final efforts to convince users to move to a newer platform.

The company has issued some advice for businesses still on XP and planning to switch to another operating system, pointing out that sticking to this old platform is extremely risky for everyone.

A blog post published today goes over a number of steps, with Microsoft recommending users to evaluate their hardware needs, prepare the existing data, check applications and their compatibility with the next operating system and finally deploy Windows 8.1 Pro.

Surprisingly, Microsoft says nothing about Windows 7, the operating system that’s said to be the number one choice for Windows XP users looking to migrate.

Of course, Redmond hopes to cut XP’s share down to 13 percent, by this is unlikely to happen given the fact that 29 percent of the desktop computers worldwide are still running this OS version.
