The last time Surface models were updated was in 2014

Microsoft’s hard efforts to make Windows 10 successful have apparently swallowed up the entire development work within the company, so some of Redmond’s products haven’t been updated in a while.

Case in point, Surface tablets, which have been skipped for the last couple of Patch Tuesdays, and this month’s update rollout makes no exception to this rule.

Surface customers might discover that no new firmware versions or improvements were shipped to their devices in January, no matter the model they purchased, and a reason for this is yet to be provided.

Are Surface tablets good enough?

Some people claim that there’s no need for new firmware versions because all Surface models are so reliable that no additional improvements are necessary.

Obviously, that’s not true and if you perform a simple search on Microsoft’s Community forums, it becomes obvious that there still are several bugs affecting the experience with a number of models, including the top-of-the-range Surface Pro 3.

One of the most annoying bugs on this tablet is the limited Wi-Fi connectivity issue that’s still reported by some of the users after several attempts to fix it. In most cases, users claim that their wireless connection drops all of a sudden and there’s no way to repair it. Switching Wi-Fi off and on doesn’t seem to make any difference, reports claim.

New tablets in 2015

Interestingly, with so many eyes on Windows 10, people more or less forgot about Microsoft’s efforts to expand in the tablet industry, so very little is known about the company’s plans for this particular side of the market.

There’s indeed some speculation online that Microsoft could launch a new Surface model in the fall of 2015 together with Windows 10, but nothing has been confirmed so far, so it’s still hard to figure out whether the company is planning to go all-in on software this year and only then continue investments in hardware.

In the meantime, those with Surface tablets would better search for alternative workarounds to fix found bugs, as the next firmware might or might not arrive in February.
