Some of the updates that Microsoft rolled out as part of the April 2015 Patch Tuesday cycle were causing quite a lot of problems to Windows users, so after nearly 4 weeks of waiting, the company has finally decided to address these issues with a new update.

KB3038314 is one of the updates that failed to install with error code 80092004, and as we told you last month, quite a lot of Windows 7 users running the 64-bit version of the operating system were seeing this.

There were indeed some workarounds, and Microsoft itself provided guidance to fix installation problems, but it turns out that an update released as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday rollout comes to solve this once and for all.

KB3049563 is a cumulative update for Internet Explorer, which not only that brings improvements for the browser but also includes fixes for error 80092004, so if you’re still experiencing issues with the previous update, look in Windows Update for this new patch.

Microsoft confirms installation issues

In an advisory rolled out last month and updated on May 12, Microsoft acknowledges installation issues and recommends users to deploy the latest cumulative security update for Internet Explorer to fix them.

“After you perform a clean installation of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, and then you upgrade from Internet Explorer 8 to Internet Explorer 11, you may receive an error message that resembles the following: Windows Update encountered an unknown error, error code 80092004,” Redmond says.

“To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. This update adds the method back.”

KB3049563 comes with a plethora of security fixes for Internet Explorer, and Microsoft says that the most severe could allow an attacker to remotely run code on the vulnerable computer after the user loads a malicious website in the browser.

Needless to say, everyone should deploy this update as soon as possible, so have a look in Windows Update and do it right away to make sure you’re fully protected.
