We heard your feedback, the company says

Windows 10 build 10130 finally brings new icons for Windows insiders after months of criticism and harsh words towards the new icon design implemented by Microsoft in build 9926, but the company still says that it needs your feedback and suggests that more changes could take place in the next updates.

In a blog post rolled out today, Microsoft explains that the new icon pack was designed to “reflect our Microsoft design language” that's supposed to bring together most of the redesigned elements across the operating system and thus lead to a consistent look for everything.

They're more modern and lightweight, the company says, and look very similar on desktops and mobile devices, so most universal apps, including those part of the Office productivity suite, should now feel and work exactly the same no matter the device.

“Feedback played a huge role in the current icon design refresh. In earlier preview builds, we heard our design was too flat and lacked richness. We’ve since iterated to deliver a balance between mono line style icons on mobile, and the three dimensional depth of desktop icons. The new icon set is familiar, yet fresh and usable,” Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

Several thousands of designs

Microsoft adds that building a new icon pack for Windows 10 is no easy task because between the Aero-style icons and the new ones we see in the operating system right now, the company designed several thousand icons to see what they look like on the desktop and mobile devices.

“We explored Swiss graphic design, Dutch product design, and modern architecture (among other design fields and styles) to inform and inspire the design process. The icon evolution will continue as we push more consistency and better functionality,” it says.

Needless to say, the new icons that are part of Windows 10 indeed seem to look better, but in the end, users are the ones to decide this. So until more feedback is collected, just download Windows 10 build 10130 to see them in action on your device too.
