Microsoft is finally ready to say goodbye to its virtual currency

A brand new report claims that Microsoft will ditch its proprietary MS Points virtual currency, used on the Xbox Live, Zune or Windows Phone Marketplaces, in favor of real world currencies.

Microsoft’s MS Points haven’t really been loved by its customers, as they involved buying cards with codes for MS Points first, loading them on their online wallet, and then buying digital content with the actual virtual currency.

Now, it seems that the company is finally ready to change its payment system, as Inside Mobile Apps claims that the MS Points will soon be replaced with real world currencies based on its customers country.

This is similar to how Sony does things on its PlayStation Store or how Apple or Google approach payment on their App Store and Android Marketplace, respectively.

When asked for a statement, a Microsoft representative gave the classic “we do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

As such, it’s unclear if Microsoft will scrap its virtual points or keep them in the near future.
