The evolution of IIS Media Services will make it easier for Internet Information Services (IIS) customers to take advantage of content protection by leveraging Microsoft’s already proven PlayReady DRM. Specifically, work done by the software giant will enable scenarios in which IIS Smooth Streaming and the company’s digital rights management technology are used in concert to protect content for HTTP streaming. In conjunction with the Streaming Media East Conference in New York City, Microsoft revealed that IIS Media Services would make possible protected HTTP Streaming by supporting a version of PlayReady DRM.

“The PlayReady DRM IIS Media Services solution will bring full file-based encryption into IIS Media Services with the ease of use of traditional stream encryption. And the solution of course will use Microsoft PlayReady technology, which is widely supported in the industry and draws on the experience gained from more than a decade of investment that Microsoft has made in the development of DRM technology,” a member of the Silverlight team revealed.

According to the Redmond company, customers should opt for file-based encryption rather than stream encryption, as it secures the actual content and not just the communication stream. A Microsoft spokesperson explained that the PlayReady DRM IIS Media Services solution had been designed in order to allow customers to deploy it on a single box. By leveraging IIS Smooth Streaming and PlayReady DRM, the digital protection solution will ensure that media content is secure for online streaming.

“We are at booth 125 at Streaming Media East this week (May 11-12) at the Hilton New York in New York City, where we are showing a preview of IIS Media Services with PlayReady DRM. We are also showing features of IIS Media Services 4, including Transform Manager, a server-side transformation engine that streamlines production workflow by enabling scenarios like encode once and simultaneously deliver multiple formats. For example with Transform Manager, you could simultaneously deliver the IIS Smooth Streaming format for Silverlight clients, and Apple’s HTTP streaming format for iPhones and iPads,” the Silverlight team representative added.

IIS customers would only need IIS Media Services and nothing more, Microsoft underlined. More importantly, the Redmond company will not charge any additional license fees or royalties for the new solution.
