KB3038314 fails to install on plenty of computers

As we reported to you yesterday, KB3038314, which is one of the updates that Microsoft rolled out this Patch Tuesday, fails to install on a lot of PCs, an issue that obviously leads to additional problems for those who cannot work when security updates are pending.

While the company has until now remained tight-lipped on what exactly happened with this patch, a Redmond engineer posted on the Microsoft Community forums to confirm that the very same problem exists on his computer too and that those in charge of it are working to develop a fix.

David Goe, who according to his Community label works for Microsoft, says the KB3038314 issues might be caused by the direct update from Internet Explorer 8 to Internet Explorer 11, as most computers would have needed a gradual update from one version to another.

“I'm speculating, but if I was a gambling man I'd bet it has something to do with the immediate update from IE8 to IE11 in one fell swoop whereas most PCs would have gone through all the IE versions updating gradually since 2009,” he said in his post.

Still no info on when a fix could be released

And yet, although KB3038314 seems to be a widespread issue, there’s still no information regarding the release date of a patch, as Microsoft is still investigating the problem and trying to figure out what went wrong.

David Goe says that developers in charge of “this part of Windows servicing” have already received the necessary information to diagnose the bug, but they’re now trying to bring out a fix, so it’s still too early to discuss about a potential release date.

In the meantime, those who cannot install KB3038314 are recommended to hide it and wait until Microsoft comes up with a fix. That’s expected to happen in the coming weeks, as Microsoft is very unlikely to wait until next month’s Patch Tuesday to address such a widespread problem.
