Microsoft released Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9841 to members of the Windows Insider Program on October 1, one day after the public unveiling during a press conference in San Francisco.

The very first update, called Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9860, was rolled out last month, and now there are rumors that the launch of a new testing version is nearing.

While details about this release are very vague right now, a Microsoft employee posted some information on the company's Community forums, revealing that some internal groups were already testing Windows 10 Technical Preview 9868.

At this point, the latest version available to users is build 9860, and we're hearing that 9868 is very likely to be the next one seeing daylight this month. Microsoft most likely aims for a higher version, sources say, but there are no details as to what the number would be.

Build 9868 being tested, higher version also available

Microsoft Community user Don.Frazier, who's also a company employee, posted a short question on the forums, asking for help because he wasn't able to update his Windows 10 TP installation to a newer version. He was running build number 9868, he said, and wanted to go to the latest version through the built-in update system.

“Briefly saw a higher version but don't recall what it was,” he explained in his post.

The response offered by a community moderator says that the Microsoft employee actually uses a build that is not available to users right now, but again, no other specifics that would indicate which version could be released to everyone have been provided.

“You are running a preview build the general public does not have access to. The only build we can use right now is build 9860. You are running build 9868 which I assume you have access to because you are a Microsoft employee,” the answer reads.

Release coming this month

Microsoft will release a new batch of security updates for Windows 10 Technical Preview tomorrow, but feature improvements and other bug fixes will only be released later this month.

If the same release schedule is maintained, Microsoft should release the new Windows 10 Technical Preview on the last Tuesday of November, which means that the updates should be here in approximately two weeks.

As it happens in Windows 10, all improvements are delivered through the new update system, so no clean installation is required, as the operating system itself performs absolutely everything without the need for user interaction.
