In an attempt to improve its standing in smartphone and tablet market, Microsoft has decided to waive all Windows 10 royalty fees for devices under 9 inches.

According to a new report coming directly from Computex 2015 technology trade fair, Microsoft Taiwan general manager of the consumer channels Eddie Wu, cited Microsoft OEM Hardware and Marketing Lead-Worldwide Marlowe Dayley, who said that the company plans to continue its free licensing program for OEM and ODM partners.

However, Microsoft has yet to finalize the hardware specifications for devices with under-9-inch displays, such as smartphones and tablets, which will be eligible for the upcoming free licensing program for Windows 10.

Microsoft announced earlier this week that Windows 10 would arrive on PC on July 29, but at the same time the Redmond-based company confirmed that all other devices would get their versions of Windows 10 later on.

The company continues its free licensing program from last year

Windows 10 Mobile is expected to be released sometime in fall or maybe slightly earlier, so Microsoft has plenty of time to announce the hardware specifications for all devices under 9-inch for which it will waive the royalty fees.

Microsoft has already partnered with many OEMs around the world, hoping to push Windows Phone platform to markets where its devices aren't so popular.

The company's announcement should not be surprising since it continues Microsoft's free licensing program kicked off last year.

Many OEMs might have already been informed by this move before Microsoft's announcement, since some have already unveiled their first Windows 10 smartphones, which are expected to be released soon after the new OS gets launched.

We expect more details from Microsoft on the hardware specs for these under 9-inch devices in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
