It’s a common practice for Microsoft to tie donation programs to initiatives designed to increase the adoption of its offerings, and Bing makes no exception to this rule. The Redmond company is collaborating with DonorsChoose.org, and offering $3 donations for each time that Bing is set as the default search engine by an end user. DonorsChoose.org was also the software giant’s partner in the recent Bing Earth Day Photo Contest, which generated funding to classroom projects across the US.

“Today we are excited to be partnering with DonorsChoose.org again and continue our support by giving you a $3 donation code to fund a classroom project of your choice when you choose Bing as your default search provider,” revealed Barbara Blanchard – Bing.

Fact is that Microsoft is prepared to donate as much as $100,000 to DonorsChoose.org via the new initiative. This means that some 3,333 users need to set Bing as their default search engine. They can do so via the Discover Bing Education webpage. Once on the site users need to click on the “Choose Bing and Donate” button, set Bing as their default search engine, and provide a valid email where they will receive the $3 DonorsChoose.org donation code. They will subsequently need to visit DonorsChoose.org and enter the code on the website in order for the donation to be completed.

“Now it's time to use a donation from Bing to help a classroom in need. Which one will you pick? Just provide us your email, and we'll send you a $3 donation code to help fund a classroom project of your choice on DonorsChoose.org,” Microsoft said. “Limit 1 donation code per user. Bing will donate up to $100,000 in $3 donation codes during the promotion. Donation codes may only be used at DonorsChoose.org and expire on August 31, 2010.”
