Microsoft will soon release the Surface Pro, the second tablet in its history, but sources familiar with the matter indicate that many more devices are currently in the pipeline.

One of them could be a smaller tablet, possibly with a 7-inch screen, which may run either the full version of Windows 8 or Windows RT.

While Microsoft is yet to confirm such a project, the company isn’t ruling out the possibility to launch a mini tablet running its own operating system.

Talking with Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet, Tami Reller, chief financial officer and chief marketing officer for the Windows division, and Aidan Marcuss, principal director, Windows Research, suggested that a smaller tablet may be released at some point, but the company first needed “to see what customers want.”

In addition, Marcuss mentioned that Windows 8 could run on both smaller and bigger screens, hinting that bringing the operating system on a new 7-inch tablet wasn’t impossible.
