Microsoft has released a new update on Patch Tuesday specifically designed to disable Enhanced Protected Mode in Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1.

As Neowin is reporting, the feature is now disabled by default, with Microsoft saying that it previously enabled Enhanced Protected Mode in order to receive feedback and data about sites using add-ons not compatible with the new Internet Explorer 11.

Now that the final version of Windows 8.1 is already available for everyone, Microsoft says that it collected enough data about incompatible websites, so the feature can be safely disabled in IE11.

"This update changes the default setting in Internet Explorer 11 for the desktop to disable Enhanced Protected Mode. During the preview releases of Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11, we enabled Enhanced Protected Mode by default in both the desktop and immersive modes of Internet Explorer," the company said in a notification.

"This was done so that we could receive feedback and data about sites that use add-ons that are incompatible with Enhanced Protected Mode."

Redmond still recommends users to keep Enhanced Protected Mode turned on if they are running compatible add-ons, just to make sure that their browsing experience is not affected when loading certain websites which include plug-ins that aren't yet working on IE11.

"This setting can be manually changed by using the Internet Options command in Internet Explorer, and then clicking the Enable Enhanced Protected Mode setting on the Advanced tab. Enterprise administrators can also use Group Policy to enable Enhanced Protected Mode on users' computers," Microsoft added.

Internet Explorer 11 is also available for Windows 7 users, with Microsoft delivering the new browser via Windows Update. In addition, the application is also offered as a separate app, so you can download Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 from Softpedia right now.
