If you’re an avid computer user, you’re most likely familiar with the term “viral,” as it’s mostly used nowadays to define specific content that’s quickly growing in popularity, such as Harlem Shake for instance.

Microsoft has created a technology that analyzes social media to identify and visualize viral content, offering a great overview on the development of each specific link.

As you can see in the video above, Microsoft’s new technology can help you distinguish popular stories from viral content, even though it may seem a bit complicated.

“What does it mean for online content to ‘go viral’? An analysis of almost a billion information cascades on Twitter news, videos, and photos has produced the first quantitative notion of whether something has indeed gone viral, thereby enabling further research into topic experts, trending topics, and viral-incident metrics,” the video’s description reads.

The technology could be obviously used for the development of new platforms, but watch the clip to see it in action.
