The search for a new CEO to replace Steve Ballmer at the helm of Microsoft continues, this time with a new name joining the list of candidates.

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft is currently discussing with Qualcomm COO Steve Mollenkopf the possibility to replace Steve Ballmer by year-end, even though it’s not yet clear whether an agreement would be reach in time.

Mollenkopf, 44, joins a list of select leaders that are being looked at for the CEO position, including Alan Mulally, Stephen Elop, Satya Nadella, and Kevin Turner.

Ford’s CEO Alan Mulally is no longer a likely candidate for the job, as recent speculation that he could stay at the American automaker has upset Microsoft’s directors.

At the same time, people familiar with the matter revealed that Microsoft also wants a CEO with more IT experience, so Mulally isn’t exactly the right man for the job.

Update: Mollenkopf has been appointed the new CEO of Qualcomm, so it turns out that he won't be the one to take over from Steve Ballmer at Microsoft.
