Redmond says that Snapchat requested the removal

Starting this weekend, Windows Phone users have basically no way to access Snapchat, not only because an official app is not yet available on their mobile platform of choice, but also because Microsoft removed all third-party clients from the store.

All Snapchat clients were suddenly deleted, including 6snap, which was until Saturday the number one app in this particular category, so many users took to forums and social networks to express their frustration.

As we reported to you a couple of days ago, the removal process was related to Snapchat’s decision to block third-party apps because of security breaches, and a Microsoft official confirmed this in a statement sent to us a few minutes ago.

“Following Snapchat’s decision to disable APIs used by third party apps across platforms, Microsoft has removed affected apps from the Windows Store. Thank you for your patience and apologies for any inconvenience,” the company spokesperson said.

In other words, it wasn’t Microsoft’s decision to remove third-party Snapchat clients, but Snapchat’s, so Redmond cannot actually be blamed for leaving users with no solution to access this popular service.

Of course, the biggest question right now concerns a possible official Snapchat client for Windows Phone, but details in this regard continue to be really vague at this point. We’ve also contacted Snapchat for some information on this saga, and we will update the article once we get an answer.

In the meantime, there’s a petition that could help convince Snapchat to build an app for Windows Phone, so make sure you sign it as soon as possible.
