Although Microsoft announced new partners for the release of new Windows Phone devices this year and offered some insight on the new features included in the next major update, the Redmond-based company did not confirm the name of the next version of Windows Phone.

There have been rumors that the next major update will be released as Windows Phone 8.1, Windows Phone 8.5 or even Windows Phone 9.0.

However, in light of the new info revealed via WindowsPhoneDaily, we can definitely say that Microsoft will launch the next version of its mobile platform under the Windows Phone 8.1 moniker.

The preview build provided to developers was tagged as Windows Phone 8.1, which was one of the hints pointing to a possible release name for the major update.

However, it appears that Microsoft has now tagged some apps in the Windows Phone Store as being compatible with Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, thus confirming the name of the update once again.

This probably doesn’t concern end users who care more about the release of the major update than the actual name. Still, it’s nice to know that you have something solid to refer to when writing about the next version of Windows Phone 8.1.

For those unaware, Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to be officially unveiled in early April at BUILD developer conference. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
