Lumia 925 and 1020 freeze when waking up from sleep

Microsoft has finally confirmed in a post on its official Community forums service that it's working on a fix for a bug found in Windows Phone 8.1 and which is causing a number of devices to freeze when trying to wake them up from sleep mode.

Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020 are said to be the only two devices that are affected by the bug which exists in Windows Phone 8.1, so Microsoft is developing a fix specifically for these two phones.

The issue has already been confirmed in Windows Phone 8.1 and the Lumia Cyan update, and it's not yet very clear if Microsoft wants to offer the fix as part of the Denim rollout or simply ship it to both phone models in the coming weeks.

Lumia Denim, the next firmware update prepared for Microsoft's Lumia phones, is expected to arrive these days, as the company confirmed that its rollout would begin in Q4 2014.

Power regulator logic failure

According to Kevin Lee, who's allegedly a Microsoft employee, it all comes down to a power regulator logic failure, so the update would be specifically designed to address this part of the OS.

Here's what Lee explained in a short post on the forums:

“Beginning in early September we started to receive an increased number of customer feedback regarding Microsoft Lumia 1020 and 925 device freezes.”

“During the last two months we have been reaching out for more and more data and devices to systematically reproduce and narrow down the root cause. It turned out to be a power regulator logic failure where in combination with multiple reasons the device fails to power up the CPU and peripherals after idling into a deep sleep state.”

At the same time, he hinted that a fix was already in the release candidate stage and should see daylight “with the next software update.”

Quick trick to prevent issues

Even though an official fix is not yet available, there are some reports pointing to an easy workaround that could temporarily address the problem and help users avoid freezing problems on their Lumias.

Microsoft user Heather Ackmann recommends those affected by the problem to disable the lock screen and change the show detailed status app to “None,” as these tweaks appear to prevent freezing on the Lumia 1020. Additionally, users can also change the Glance Screen interval settings to 30 seconds in case the problem still occurs.

Several other users have already confirmed that this solution worked, so if you're experiencing the same problem on your computer, give it a shot and see how it goes.
