Microsoft Senior Product Marketing Manager Michael Niehaus revealed a few weeks ago that users who install the official Preview version of Windows 8.1 would lose all their apps when making the switch to the RTM build.

The company has confirmed this update policy in a notification sent on Microsoft Connect to select developers who have been picked to test drive the upcoming Windows 8.1 Preview.

“Please remember to back up your data prior to upgrading your systems. As with any Preview software, this is not the final version of the software. You will not be able to perform a full upgrade from Windows 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 RTM (the final release). You will however be able to migrate all your data to Windows 8.1 RTM,” the notification reads.

Windows 8.1 Preview is set to make its public debut at BUILD next week, while the RTM version is expected to arrive in August. General availability is scheduled for October, according to some leaked details.
