A company representative says that users will still be allowed to choose

Microsoft has tweaked the default behavior of the boot to desktop option in Windows 8.1 Update to better match the device that you’re using, so on desktop computers, for example, this feature will be turned to quickly skip the Start screen.

However, it appears that Redmond is looking into ways to provide users with more customization power, so although boot to desktop will come with some changes in Windows 8.1 Update, you can still change the default behavior in order to match your preferences.

In other words, if you don’t want to boot straight to the desktop and you still want to see the Start screen every time you start your computer (or vice versa) you can change that straight from the desktop.

“This is completely customizable. If you want to keep booting to the Start screen you can make it do that by right-clicking on the taskbar and clicking ‘Properties’ and going to the ‘Navigation’ tab,” Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc said.

Windows 8.1 Update will be delivered to users tomorrow, so make sure that you keep your Internet connection active to download it as soon as it’s made available. Windows 8.1 Update is free of charge and can be downloaded by all those who are currently running Windows 8.1.
