Microsoft has confirmed some of the rumors that have been building up recently, it is working on making SkyDrive a complete cloud sync and file storage solution. Specifically, there will be a Metro-style app for Windows 8, SkyDrive will be integrated directly into Windows Explorer and, of course, users will be able to access their files online at SkyDrive.com.
Windows 8 is some time away, but it's clear that the cloud sync market is going to get a lot more interesting or at least more crowded.
While there are plenty of competitors in the space, the one that matters is Dropbox which boasts some 50 million users.
But
Google is working on a competitor, built on top of Docs, called Drive and coming within the next few months at the latest.
Microsoft already has a number of file sync products, but that's the problem, there are too many products with overlapping features and unnecessary hurdles. The new SkyDrive apps sound like they address all of the problems though.
